I want to talk about B&H’s Optic 2022. Optic is something I try never to miss. Actually, there is no excuse for missing it because they post the presentations on B&H Event Space on YouTube. What we are talking about here is presentations and teachings from the world’s preeminent photographers. The absolute best of the best. They teach in many genres and everyone can learn from them regardless of the genre you normally shoot. Being a student of photography watching these has become a priority of mine.
For wildlife photographers you have one of the best on the planet teaching it with, Ralph Lee Hopkins. He photographs for National Geographic and is one of my most favorite wildlife photographers. His captures are perfection. He teaches how he does all of this and displays some incredible images. I look at his photography as inspiration to work to produce images like he does.
Harvey Stein is an absolute master of Street photography. He teaches how he accomplishes those wonderful images and the details it takes. If you can’t learn from him then you just can’t learn.
Scott Kelby teaches travel photography. Scott is well known world-wide and needs little to no introduction.
While photographing models is not necessarily a focus of Optic 2022, no one can argue that Joe McNally is not the best in the world at this. He is an excellent teacher. His humility and self-deprecation lends itself to teaching the details of this type of photography. The detail he goes into with his lighting process and how he explains it all makes it so clear and simple yet most of us never practice it, even though we should. His presentation may not be on that subject at Optic 2022 but I won’t miss anything he does.
There are many others and all are world-class. If you are a photographer, I wouldn’t miss this regardless of what you normally photograph. You can always learn. I do.
